Hard to believe its already Maple Open House Weekend, equally hard to believe is that for another year it doesn’t look like we have good sugaring weather for the big weekend. It seems every year no matter if we move it from the end of March to the beginning of April, the weather does not cooperate.
For us its ok, due to our location we don’t participate, but we do usually take the opportunity to visit a few sugarhouses ourselves and I hope everyone else does as well.
Now for the update on the season. Really it feels like we are beginning our second season as things have totally reset back to winter conditions. Its been a pretty slow March. As we all know at this point, the Northeast got hammered with snow last week. We were the big winners in VT, as Underhill got 40″ of the stuff, and its snowing fairly hard as I write this.
We did boil twice last week, and the sap ran a bit better than I predicted due to the full sun we had for three days. By no means was it a big run or even an OK run, but it added up a little bit. We made a little shy of 1000 gallons, bringing our season total near 7000 gallons, a mark I thought we would hit nearly two weeks ago! We have fallen behind last season at this point, and on this very day we made 995 gallons from one days worth of sap.
The forecast is calling for a return to above freezing temps, though many days are upper 30’s and low 40’s with snow and rain. If we had this type of weather in April I’d be pumped but since its been so cold, and we have frozen ground under the snow, I don’t see any big runs coming in the next week. We will for sure get sap and be boiling here and there but we will not be making a ton of syrup. At the same time I should be happy that we will be adding to our season totals, and that there appears to be no end in sight. I really would like to see 2 or 3 days in the 50’s to open things up. My trees seem to love warm weather being 1200-2000′ elevation and on a mostly west and north slope. I usually fall behind warmer bushes in the area early on and begin to make it up when it gets warm. Some years conditions are right and we pass those warmer bushes, some years we never get the conditions to make up all the ground we lost.
I’m hoping we make more syrup in April this year than March, on average we do, and if that’s the case it will be a great year!
