We did have one week from hell in February. Most notably was the -24 degree day that ended up breaking numerous fittings, valves and pipes. In fact, in one cold snap we had more damage than all of the last few winters combined. It was an unpleasant surprise when we turned on the vacuum a day later when the sap began to run and we had 0 vacuum on all 4 releasers. We also had issues boiling the syrup, and had some electrical issues, and due to the lack of snow, a lot of animal chews. Typically the animals move out of our woods when the snow gets too deep so we don't have to worry about them biting the tubing once the sap runs, but not this year. The good news is we turned the corner and put that week behind us!
Looking forward, it appears we have some real sugaring weather starting next Monday and I expect that the real season will arrive. I plan to get some family time in, a day of skiing, and some sleep because I don't expect to get any of that soon.
