We began tapping yesterday. It looks like we will tap around 15,000 of our trees this year, and should take us 3-4 weeks. One person can tap between 400-600 or so depending on snow depth and terrain. We try to tap when the temperature is above 20 F, hard to believe that is was -27 F on Monday.
We also test fired our new evaporator and it is sweet. We should reduce our boiling time and fuel consumption considerably this year which is always good. A pic of it is below, unfortunately it is only a cell phone pic.
In addition I am running a couple seminars at the VT Maple School in Bellows Falls, VT this weekend on modern tubing systems. I guess Dad will have to tap a few more for me.
I am hoping we don't get any warm weather from here until we are done tapping or we will be scrambling once again. It seems as though no matter what you do, you can never be fully prepared for the sap to run.
